Article: Tectonic Plates Must Move

Tectonic Plates Must Move

Tectonic Plates Must Move

Dear Evolving Reader,

I have found that there seems to be an unspoken belief that if we think long enough, analyse deeply enough or prepare thoroughly enough, life will eventually reward us with clarity. That one day we'll wake up and simply know.

We'll know whether to leave the relationship, start the business, take the opportunity or take the risk. We imagine clarity as something that arrives first, as though it is an invitation to finally begin living. But that is not how life works at all. In fact, I think certainty has become one of the greatest modern addictions. Not because certainty itself is dangerous, but because our pursuit of it keeps us standing still while life rewards those who move.

We convince ourselves that we're being responsible by not taking actions, when often we're simply finding more sophisticated ways to delay making ourselves uncomfortable. We mistake endless planning for productivity and believe that more information will somehow give us more confidence. Certainty isn't something you're given. It's something you earn through taking action.

Over the years, I have witnessed Samara live this principle.  Throughout her journey, there have been moments in business and in her spiritual evolution where she has reached a plateau, felt frustrated, or simply known that the version of herself she had become was no longer enough for where she wanted to go next. And what has always struck me is that she never treated those moments as a reason to stop. She invested in herself more.  She sought out people who were ahead of her. She entered rooms that stretched her. She found teachers, mentors and experiences that could show her something she couldn't yet see for herself. She was willing to invest her time, energy and money into becoming the person who could hold the next level of her life.

I've come to understand the same thing for myself. There have been moments where I've felt frustrated because I couldn't see the next step clearly. But I've learnt that those moments aren't often a sign that you need to retreat and figure everything out alone, they're a sign that you need to get into a different space. You cannot create a new answer from the same information that created the problem. The breakthrough you're looking for is sitting in a different space to what you are in. One conversation, one mentor, one book or one new environment can introduce you to a possibility you couldn't have reached by thinking about the same thing in the same way.

This is why investing in yourself matters. It's not because every investment immediately gives you the answer, but because it changes the information available to you. It changes the people you speak to, the questions you ask, the standards you hold yourself to and, ultimately, what you believe is possible for your life. That is where the breakthrough happens.

One of my favourite examples of this is found in nature. Beneath our feet, something extraordinary is happening every second. The tectonic plates are moving. You can't see them. Most of the time, you can't feel them. Yet because they move, mountains rise, valleys are carved, oceans separate and entire continents slowly become something completely different from what they once were. Imagine if the tectonic plates had decided to wait until they were completely certain before they moved. Nothing would have changed or formed. The very landscape we admire today would never have existed. There would be no mountain ranges to admire, no dramatic coastlines, no valleys that take your breath away. The very beauty of our planet exists because something beneath the surface refused to stay still.

I wonder how many of us are doing the opposite. We tell ourselves we're waiting for the right moment, but what we're really waiting for is the guarantee that we'll never fail. We're waiting until rejection is impossible. Until uncertainty disappears. Until someone else confirms we're making the right choice. That day will never come...

Life will always reward movement, not hesitation.

Movement doesn't always mean knowing exactly where you're going. Sometimes movement is simply deciding that where you are is no longer where you're willing to remain. It might mean investing in the mentor who challenges your thinking, walking into a room where you feel like the least experienced person there, reading the book that introduces you to an entirely new way of seeing your life, or saying yes to an opportunity that stretches you. These moments may not feel monumental at the time. But neither does a tectonic plate shifting a few centimetres. Given enough time, those tiny movements reshape the world. In the same way, they reshape you.

So if you're currently frustrated because you don't know what the next chapter looks like, the answer isn't to sit still until you figure it out. It is to move. Invest in yourself. Find the people who are ahead of you. Get into rooms that expand your perspective. Allow yourself to be a beginner again. Seek out the information your current environment cannot give you. The clarity you're waiting for is on the other side of an investment you're not yet willing to make. The path only becomes visible once you're already walking it.

The tectonic plates must move. So must you.

 Until next week...

With great love,

Summer
